Transforming Network Infrastructure for Cloud-Optimized 5G Services

Posted by admin    /    wxklxzjmlaaa

first_imgCo-authored by:Rajesh Gadiyar, CTO, Network Platforms Group, Intel Corp.Kevin Shatzkamer, Vice President, Service Provider Strategy and Solutions, Dell EMCImagine the future – a scalable, composable and automated network infrastructure that meets the high-performance needs of tomorrow’s 5G services and makes it easy to build, deploy, manage, and provide assurance for new end-to-end applications. The new era of 5G networks will see technology and operational transformation, but also business innovations that result in intelligent applications consuming and generating data like never before. These intelligent applications will introduce a new set of requirements – latency, bandwidth, capacity, coverage – that drives a transformation of the entire end-to-end architecture, including the compute, network, and storage infrastructure. What used to be possible only in science fiction movies – flying drones, driverless cars and planes, machine-to-machine interactions, seamless communication around the globe – is fast becoming a reality.Since 2012, the industry has experienced acceleration of changes leveraging the capabilities of compute, network, and storage virtualization to drive new capital and operational models, deliver new services, and improve overall service delivery economics. The new operational imperatives for Communications Service Providers (CoSPs), can largely be captured into three core technology shifts:Leverage disaggregation of hardware and software stacks to shift workloads towards general purpose compute, such as Intel architecture.Decouple core infrastructure and network services from applications and protocols, and expose those services as a platform to applications.Develop a set of information models, data models and APIs to transform operations from bespoke processes and associated infrastructure scripts, to more unified automation frameworks that allow service providers to develop DevOps-style operational processes.Every decade, the mobile industry goes through a major upgrade cycle of their network architecture – from the Radio Access Network (RAN) to the Packet Core – to meet the insatiable demand of smart mobile devices and the new generation of applications and services. The impending 5G transition, with significant advances in bandwidth, latency and quality of service, will unleash a new wave of services including enhanced mobile broadband, connected cars, drones, smart retail, industrial robots and much more. Why a Software-Defined Infrastructure Is Critical to the 5G TransitionThe advent of smart everything and the growing amount of data traffic is already putting immense pressure on the network infrastructure. The CoSPs – aka telco operators – have a business challenge: How do they deal with this increased traffic efficiently at a lower cost and allow for rapid deployment of end to end services to grow business. This motivates the CoSPs to aggressively transform their network by virtualizing network functions on cloud infrastructure with Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Software Defined Networks (SDN). The result is a homogeneous infrastructure that utilizes standard high volume Intel servers that deliver TCO benefits as well as the cloud scale necessary for next generation of applications and services. The NFV deployments are already happening, and over the last three years we have seen strong commitment from CoSPs around the globe. The smart applications enabled by 5G technology will utilize concepts such as network slicing to deliver high bandwidth and lower latency, with end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS), ranging from devices to network infrastructure and the cloud. The need for service assurance drives a few key requirements:First, the infrastructure needs to be composable and scalable, so the compute resources such as CPU, memory, storage and networking can be dynamically assigned based on the needs of the application.Second, these resources need to be configured, monitored and managed somewhat “automatically” based on well-defined policies and a Management and Orchestration (MANO) framework based on standard APIs also known as ‘closed loop automation’.Third, the infrastructure needs to be secure and resilient. As multi-tenancy and service innovation on an open architecture becomes the order of the day, end-to-end security needs to become pervasive.Intel and Dell EMC: The Pillars of 5G5G represents a significant opportunity for the telecommunications industry to bring together these Digital transformation trends into a unified architecture leveraging the capabilities that Software-Defined Networking (SDN), Network Function Virtualization (NFV), and increasing amounts of automation and orchestration. The insatiable demand for ubiquitous, uniform connectivity and capacity, enabling services such as the Internet of Things, Connected Vehicles, mission-critical data services, and broadband everywhere, delivered with cloud economics, creates the perfect opportunity for 5G networks to leverage the new technology discussed above.Source: 5G PPPIntel and Dell EMC are aligned on the pillars of 5G networks, the need to embrace the three core technology shifts, and have an established relationship to research and develop solutions that help CoSPs rise to the challenge by:Engaging strategically with CoSPs to define, prioritize, research, develop and bring to market infrastructure innovations that solve key challenges the industry is facing.Developing a cloud optimized, 5G RAN infrastructure with a virtualized Radio Access Networks (vRAN) or Cloud RAN (CRAN), leveraging the benefits of pooled resources for baseband and packet processing.Developing a joint infrastructure solution for Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) allowing intelligence at the edge with new applications such as Augment Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), Analytics at the Edge, Edge Caching for Content Delivery Networks, IoT Gateways, and other low-latency applications.Creating a joint lab environment where Intel and Dell EMC engineers can collaborate on researching, prototyping, and developing solutions.Investing in applied research that helps the industry understand the benefits of infrastructure enablers embedded in general purpose computing platforms. This includes leveraging FPGAs for workload acceleration, NVMe technology, DPDK for efficient Data Plane processing, and Intel® Quick Assist Technology (QAT) to deliver end-to-end security, improving the performance and efficiency of workloads at the network edge.In summary, the world is changing rapidly. The advent of “smart everything” and the intelligent end-to-end applications driven by 5G will require an infrastructure transformation – to an efficient, flexible and composable infrastructure. The Intel and Dell EMC partnership is delivering the solutions to enable this infrastructure transformation and enable this “smart everything” revolution.last_img read more

FT: Renewables Jobs Grew by 5% in 2015 as Oil and Gas Employment Fell Sharply

Posted by admin    /    wxklxzjmlaaa

first_imgFT: Renewables Jobs Grew by 5% in 2015 as Oil and Gas Employment Fell Sharply FacebookTwitterLinkedInEmailPrint分享Pilita Clark for the Financial Times:The number of jobs in the global renewable energy industry grew by 5 per cent last year, in stark contrast to the steep losses suffered by the oil and gas sector.Solar, wind and other clean energy companies employed 8.1m people worldwide in 2015, up from 7.7m the previous year, according to data released by the International Renewable Energy Agency, an intergovernmental body based in Abu Dhabi.Another 1.3m people were working in the large hydropower industry, which Irena counts separately because numbers fluctuate so sharply from year to year they would distort the overall picture. The agency’s figures reflect a global shift that has seen renewable power soar in big Asian markets and falter in older markets such as the EU, where green energy jobs fell for the fourth year amid sluggish economic growth. While overall growth in green energy jobs has slowed from the 18 per cent annual increase the agency reported last year, it still represents a brighter employment picture than in the oil and gas industry, where tumbling crude prices have exacted a heavy toll on employment.Renewable energy jobs in the US rose 6 per cent, for example, while employment in oil and gas companies fell 18 per cent, according to Irena. In China, the world’s biggest renewable energy market, green power companies employed 3.5m people in 2015 compared with 2.6m in the oil and gas industries.“The continued job growth in the renewable energy sector is significant because it stands in contrast to trends across the energy sector,” said Irena director-general Adnan Amin. The slower growth in renewables jobs seen in 2015 was because of market consolidation and greater mechanisation in some parts of the industry, according to Rabia Ferroukhi, one of the report’s authors. But that does not mean the agency is revising down its growth estimates for 2030, she said.Mr Amin said he expected renewables jobs to grow in the wake of the climate change accord struck in Paris in December, which requires countries to regularly spell out how they are dealing with greenhouse gas emissions. The agency says today’s 8.1m renewable energy jobs should swell to more than 24m by 2030, assuming the share of renewables in the global energy mix doubles. As in previous years, the solar panel industry was the biggest renewables employer worldwide last year, with 2.8m jobs, an increase of 11 per cent.It was followed by liquid biofuels, with 1.7m jobs and wind power, which employed 1.1m people.Full article ($): Green jobs grow as oil employment fallslast_img read more

Ban on stem-cell patents ‘wrong’

Posted by admin    /    wxklxzjmlaaa

first_img Sharing is caring! 21 Views   no discussions HealthLifestyle Ban on stem-cell patents ‘wrong’ by: – April 27, 2011 Share Tweetcenter_img Share Share Developing therapies from human embryonic stem cells is under threat in Europe, say scientists. In a letter to Nature, they express “profound concern” about moves at the European Court of Justice to ban patent protection for embryonic stem cell lines.A law officer argues it should be unlawful to allow patents where research involved destroying embryos. The judges are not bound to follow the advice but frequently do so.Human embryonic stem cells have the potential to turn into any tissue in the body. Many scientists are excited by the prospect of using stem cells to create healthy replacement cells to treat disease. After more than a decade of research the first clinical trials are underway in the US.In their letter to Nature, the scientists argue that industry would have no incentive to invest in this area unless their innovations could be protected with patents. One of the co-signatories is Professor Austin Smith from the Wellcome Trust Centre for Stem Cell Research in Cambridge. He said: “It would be devastating if the court was to follow this advice. It would put at threat the future of biomedical research in Europe and some projects here could collapse.“It would also send the message that scientists are engaged in immoral activity so this is very negative for our community and it would erode public confidence in what we do.”Professor Smith said there were now more than 100 embryonic stem cell lines which could be maintained indefinitely, so the concern about the commercialisation of the human embryo was misplaced.Professor Pete Coffey, director of the London Project to Cure Blindness, said there was an “ethical need to treat disease” and if a ban on patents was applied then Europe would lose its place as a leader in this area of research. His team is hoping to begin clinical trials of a treatment for a form of blindness in the next year or so.The case before the court was originally begun by Greenpeace in Germany. An adviser to Greenpeace, Dr Christoph Then, said the organisation was not opposed to all stem cell research: “We do not think the opinion of the Advocate General is so clear.“Our original purpose was to clarify the patent law, especially around the industrial use of embryos.”A ruling from the European Court of Justice is expected within a couple of months.By Fergus Walsh, BBC Newslast_img read more

Stenson stars as Woods woe goes on

Posted by admin    /    wxklxzjmlaaa

first_img Seeking to become the fifth European winner in the last six years, Stenson birdied four of his last six holes for a five-under-par 65 to share the lead with American Dustin Johnson. But there was more misery for former world number one Woods, who s aid on Tuesday he was willing to endure “short-term suffering for long-term gain” after coming into the event on the back of the worst score (85) and four-round total (302) of his career in the Memorial Tournament. Press Association Sweden’s Henrik Stenson carded his lowest score ever in a major as Tiger Woods recorded his highest in the US Open on a day of contrasting fortunes at Chambers Bay.center_img Woods carded eight bogeys, one triple bogey and a solitary birdie in an opening 80, three shots more than his previous highest score while still an amateur in 1996. The only consolation for the 39-year-old was that he outscored playing partner Rickie Fowler, who shot 81 despite being inches away from an albatross on the par-four 12th. With Louis Oosthuizen shooting 77, Woods’s group were a combined 28 over par. “The bright side is at least I kicked Rickie’s butt today,” joked Woods, who has been making swing changes with consultant Chris Como. “I fought hard and that was my number. I could not have grinded any harder than that. I know when I do it right, it’s so easy. I just need to do it more often.” Italy’s Francesco Molinari, Scotland’s Marc Warren and Masters champion Jordan Spieth were three shots off the pace after rounds of 68, with the 51-year-old duo of Colin Montgomerie and Miguel Angel Jimenez another stroke back alongside Phil Mickelson, who needs a first US Open win after six runners-up finishes to complete the career grand slam. World number one Rory McIlroy struggled on the greens in an opening 72, while Sergio Garcia admitted the putting surfaces were “as bad as they look on TV” after finishing level par. The greens were not the only difficulty either, with Stenson’s caddie Gareth Lord injuring his left wrist on Wednesday and Stephen Gallacher forced to replace his caddie Damian Moore due to a leg injury suffered on the same day. “Walking off the 16th he took the fall, both feet in the air, and got trapped with his wrist under the bag,” Stenson said. “He’s in a cast now. It might be broken or just torn ligaments. “He’s not in a good place with the hand, but he managed to caddie and did a good job for me anyway. I had to caddie for him a little bit, as well. I t’s definitely dangerous with those slopes and the grass gets shiny and lays down. It gets a bit like ice skating out there.” Johnson threatened to equal the lowest score in major championship history – 63 – when he reached six under par with two holes to play, but miscued a chip on the par-five eighth and bogeyed the ninth. The 30-year-old won the WGC-Cadillac Championship in March, his first victory since taking six months out of the game to deal with “personal challenges”, a move which ruled him out of the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles and prompted allegations – which he has always refuted – of a positive test for cocaine. last_img read more
